Kurgan is a counterterrorism consultant with operational experience in the Middle East and Africa during the Global War on Terror.
Kurgan was initially trained and worked in aviation counterterrorism before subsequently undertaking overseas counterterrorism consultancy work.
Kurgan currently practises counterterrorism, risk and strategic threat management through Sentinel Defence, a division of Sentinel Strategic, where he applies his specialist practitioner experience to complex threat and risk situations.
Kurgan holds a BA (Hons), MA, MRes and PhD, all in War Studies, alongside the Certified Counter Terrorism Practitioner (CCTP) designation.
Kurgan's academic background complements his practitioner experience, resulting in a unique and highly-sought counter-terrorism-grade methodology rooted in analytical discipline, risk and threat assessment principles, and specialist practitioner skills developed through counter-terrorism practice, war studies, and military strategy.
His counter-terrorism-grade methodology is applied to counterterrorism and counter-extremism, counter-intelligence and counter-surveillance, strategic threat and vulnerability assessment, risk management and mitigation, situational awareness and behavioural detection, aviation and travel risk in high-risk environments, and kidnap, ransom and extortion prevention.
As Director and Principal Adviser, Kurgan provides the senior strategic direction for Sentinel Strategic engagements and leads the firm's specialist advisory work.

Dr Ali Ajaz is a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist with BSc, MBBS, MRCPsych and PGCert qualifications.
Dr. Ajaz was trained at Guy's, King's & St Thomas' School of Medicine before training and qualifying within the NHS as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist.
Dr. Ajaz has worked across high, medium and low secure settings with highly complex, high-profile and high-risk cases. He has more than 15 years' experience as an expert witness in criminal and civil proceedings across the UK and internationally, with particular specialist experience in terrorism cases and risk assessment.
He has also held a Senior Clinical Lecturer position at Queen Mary University of London for more than 10 years, encompassing teaching and research, including work relating to radicalisation, extremism and risk assessment.
Within Sentinel Strategic, Dr. Ajaz provides specialist psychiatric, behavioural and forensic perspectives where these are relevant to the assessment of complex or ambiguous situations.
His expertise complements the firm's strategic and counterterrorism capabilities, particularly where psychological, behavioural or forensic considerations form part of the wider risk picture.
